Words can not really describe how excited I am for RENT! I have been pumped for it since about January, ever since I heard my beloved Michael Murphy was going to play Roger Davis. Don’t misinterpret this, I have not and conceivably will not ever have a relationship with Michael Murphy but he was my absolute first crush. I am sure many girls had their hearts flutter a little when Mike did his point and wink but my god my heart went boom boom. For those of you not quite as familiar with New Zealand pop celebrity, Michael Murphy was runner-up in NZ Idol.
Travesty.
I’m not bitter.
Anyway, let’s just say it was a deep deep love (read: obsession). I had many a signature from him as evidenced still on my mantlepiece. Shamefully I used to ring up Classic Hits every time they mentioned his name on the off chance they might pick me to meet him….they never did.
I did sit behind him in TROY once though, rewatching that movie I can still name the scenes he laughed in. Too far Sarah, too far. But I am over it now even if sometimes I still have a solemn moment for the loss of my Michael Murphy answering machine message. The guy was a superstar!
So as you can imagine I am just beyond delighted to be going to RENT. Not only will I get to watch my one true love but it is an awesome musical. My friend loves RENT. And we used to always sing the song “Seasons of Love” , except I could never get the numbers right. But finally on Friday night I will get my chance to sing “five hundred, twenty five thousand, six hundred minutes!”
Just a wee synopsis for you, RENT is set in 1990’s New York and tells the story of a group of young peeps struggling to pay their rent. It has some pretty intense themes much like life really. I’m excited to finally see it on stage. It is the longest running musical on Broadway as well so it is sure to be rad. And I just saw there are elements of nudity, I would be lying if I said that didn’t excite me any more. Just quietly I hope its Roger Davis.
There is much hype around this musical and I think it would be a mistake to miss it.
