    Avenue Q group blog

    Kma_meets_some_of_the_cast_of_

Some of our Kiss My Arts bloggers went to the Avenue Q, so we thought we’d do a combined blog post. Innovative, I know. And look, they even managed to meet some of the cast… we didn’t even organise that, great initiative team!

What were you expecting? Was it what you expected?

Jonathan: I wasn't sure what to expect. When I looked it up online, the initial idea struck me as some toilet humour type thing for 14 year olds.  When I watched it though, as a writer myself, I thought - 'this is what I want write!' It obviously did have a bit of toilet humour, but just the right amount to make it funny and not over do it. A very unique way of telling a very real story about the modern human experience.

Suzi: I was expecting a saucier version of Seasame Street and definitely got so much more wit and hilarity than I expected.

Al: I was expecting to laugh, to cry, to hurl... well all of these except crying and hurling... I was also expecting to blush on occasion! I DEFINITELY laughed... there were tears in my eyes, but from laughing and the only time I wanted to hurl was abuse at the crazy lady who left her cellphone on! I didn't actually blush much to be honest - there were some really funny innuendos, but they were clever, and some scenes that would have made me blush beyond all blushingness, if it were not for the fact that it was puppets doing the deed!!! I think the fact that Puppets are doing and saying what they are saying, serves to diffuse a lot of the offence - kind of like Team America world police... but with real puppets and no Southpark overtones!

    Who was your favourite character?

Jonathan: Trekkie Monster! Everytime he had a line I laughed.  Even when he didn't have a line I laughed. His movements were so elaborate.

Suzi: I loved Christmas Eve and Trekkie Monster!!

Al: Hmmm... Gary Coleman was awesome - just the fact that they would have someone play such a cult-hero is pretty sweet! Please don't ask me what I'm talking about, and my name ain't Willis! Out of the puppets I think I have a little puppet crush on Kate Monster... The same way Jessica Rabbit was hot... and who never had a thing for smurfette!

    What was your favourite song?

Jonathan: It's too hard to decide but it'd be between 'if you were gay' and 'we're all a little racist'

Suzi : The songs were brilliant - "It Sucks To Be Me" and "The More You Ruv (Love) Someone" were my favourites.

Al: Each one was incredibly clever - but I DID quite like "It Sucks to be Me" and then another song which talked about being the person that makes others feel good about their life cos yours is so appalling! It had a big fancy German name and rocked my Laderhosen. Oh, and not to give much a way, but forever and ever from this day forth I shall be a "Right-Click and click Open" kind of guy to avoid the mental images associated now with Double Clicking!

What word would you use to describe Avenue Q?

    Jonathan: 'Schadenfreude' - it's German!

    Suzi: Hilarious

    Al: Captivating

    Who should see the show?

Jonathan: Anyone with a sense of humour. Maybe even those who don't. Anyone who is wondering what their purpose is in life and those who think they've figured theirs out.

Suzi: I think any mature person who grew up with Seasame Street would appreciate the parodies in the show and the humour.

Al: Everyone that isn't my Father-in-law. If you find Benny Hill and The Two Ronnies a wee bit amusing, find innuendo and sharp wit and timing rather nice - then you will NOT be disappointed. Honestly - GO GO GO - NOW! Why are you still reading this?
